network of mediated architectural & design

The network of mediated architectural design (n-o-m-a-d.org) is a global network of independent offices with competencies including architecture, urbanism, sociology, structural and biological engineering, ecology, and media design in Vienna, London, Graz, Edinburgh, and Baltimore. Initiated in April, 2000 as an interdisciplinary platform for the discussion and analysis of changes in society and their effects on the built environment, n-o-m-a-d offers a teamoriented working method during which members and partners from particular disciplines, or with certain resources are introduced at the beginning of a project, creating a holistic and creative approach to design. This decentralized method creates a dialogue across territories, disciplines, and cultures, and enriches a expansive and strategic palette of options and decisions in the formulation of a project.

n-o-m-a-d members have applied this method on numerous international and national competitions and projects within the work. Additionally, members have gained experience while holding leadership positions on international large-scale projects, as masterplans in Singapore and Spain with Zaha Hadid, the Battersea Power Station Redevelopment in London with Nicholas Grimshaw, or the Casa da Música from OMA in Porto. Many network members are also active in research and teaching at institutions in the UK, Austria, and the USA. This symbiosis of theory and praxis is significant for the work of the network.

n-o-m-a-d experiments with knowledge platforms, content management systems, and other technical developments in an attempt to challenge current standards and traditional methods of architectural production. Rather than following a hierarchical structure which translates a principal´s ideal into a built structure, our approach is defined by the construction of a decentralized working and organisational model, a process which we define as design management.

n-o-m-a-d.org was named one of the top 100 young international design teams in the 2005 edition of 10*10, issued by Phaidon Press, New York.
